<image:caption>MERYL MEYER ~ Eaglely, Waiting For My Sibling to Arrive, 8 x 11, Soft Pastel on Canson Mi-teintes Black Paper - "One of my favorite pastimes is observing Eagles and their nests on live video cams. I am a big fan of Friends of Big Bear Valley and have watched Jackie and Shadow mate, build nests, protect and care for their baby eaglets. It has been quite an educational adventure. I even won a contest naming one of their eagles, "Sunny" last year. So this was the perfect subject for me. I painted from one of their screen shots so they get all the credit for the reference. I used Black Canson Paper and the texture was great for the soft baby feathers. Painting the nest was more difficult as it was quite detailed. Jackie and Shadow are presently waiting for their 2 new eggs to hatch this year. I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure."</image:caption>

<image:caption>KATHY HUTCHINSON ~ It Is Spring After All, 5 x 6, various pastels on reclaimed Artspectrum soft umber sanded paper - "I'm enjoying this beautiful Spring weather even with the wild fluctuations in temperatures. What better way to honor the rebirth that Spring brings than a nest of bright blue eggs. I must admit to a painting I saw online as inspiration - well that and the delightful song birds in my gardens."</image:caption>

But the unexpected rings of shadows from the mixing bowl got my interest. This needs more work on the edges of the eggs, but I got to the 'beware of ruining the whole thing' stage and stopped. I’ll be braver next time! Love these challenges!"</image:caption>

The snow was fast and fun to do - all “negative lifting” with an eraser. I’ll try again in pastel and maybe keep it tonal but with a bit of color? Happy Holidays everyone!"</image:caption>

I was able to easily transition into my true inner nature, a place of inner peace, stillness, and non-busyness. Some of my ways of life stem from the sacred symbol of the Medicine Wheel and other Native American teachings. The East is thus an important direction for me. Each day, as the sun rises in the East, I wake with gratitude for a new day of life. On this early evening, the full moon was rising in the East in my neighborhood."</image:caption>

<image:caption>VERNONA HEARNE ~ "Recently I saw Ron DiCianni’s work for the first time. His “Simeon’s Moment,” overwhelmed me with joy. After seeing this work I googled the artist and read his exciting life’s calling as a Christian artist. I sketched his painting, calling mine “Simeon’s Joy.” DiCianni’s painting is based on the New Testament account of Simeon holding the 8 day old baby Jesus, who is “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to Your people Israel.” I plan to apply beautiful pastels to my sketch soon. I hope you each had joyful 2025 holidays and may 2026 fill your life with awe and wonder. Again and again THANK YOU APS for everything!"</image:caption>

Several painters in various genres approached it, including soft pastels. I needed to give it a try. This was my best friend's Mom. She was a Social Worker, and I would spend some holidays with them in Rhode Island in a place called "Harmony". She loved making pasta and pastries in her spare time. I loved the home cooking nostalgia. There are many wonderful memories especially during the holidays. I made this sketch so I could really feel that moment in time. <image:caption>TERRILYNN DUBREUIL ~ Unsettled: Contemplating Wyeth, 18 x 12, UArt paper - Some of my recent pieces have taken on subtle social commentary. 'Unsettled' shows a girl stopping mid-stride to turn and look at an Andrew Wyeth painting in a gallery. The tilted horizon and shredded marks of the surroundings suggest a sense of the precarious world young people inhabit today. She stops in her tracks captured by the painting, holding her braid as if it were a rope to a sense of security. Her feet point forward to the future, but her mind is trapped by the evasive meaning of this, one of Andrew Wyeth’s final paintings."</image:caption>

<image:caption>MERYL MEYER ~ Old Poplar, 9 x 12, Black UART 400, charcoal, hard pastels and a few soft pastels - "This is the most photographed tree here on the Blue Ridge Parkway along Craggy Pinnacle Trail. I have captured it many times and stood in awe. The mist always travels through here creating a mystical atmosphere. It is an old gnarly tree with big roots surrounded by ferns and moss, and it feels like it is reaching out. I began using gray, white, and black charcoals on black paper and gradually added some greens. I wanted to capture the misty foggy mood and its fairy tale-like essence. I have been wanting to paint this tree for a long time. Thank you for this challenge. Trees always speak to me."</image:caption>

It may never be something that is entirely finished, but I have enjoyed working on it and will again. It's a tree that used to be in the French Broad River Park. It sat on the edge of the bank. I have drawn it in charcoal and painted it several times in pastel. It's a gnarly old tree and I really liked the way it looked. I liked leaving the background just black. It seemed to bring out the tree's colors better. I used Terry Ludwig's violets and also some J. Luda pastels. I enjoyed the Adventure."</image:caption>

I painted a dry underpainting then layered with yellow and pink, and blue-green whites. Used soft pastel for the center, some dew drops and the background. This was very therapeutic for me. I alcohol-washed a black background on eggplant Colorfix paper then finished with various hard & soft pastels and pastel pencils. Having just come from the APS workshop with portraitist LL Winner, I was in the mood for 'faces'. So I went for doing a close up of a part of Rubens wonderful painting of Clara Serena. I had difficulty discerning his colors – only used a color printout; next time I’ll download a museum quality photo and use my iPad to better figure out colors. <image:caption>TERRILYNN DUBREUIL ~ Three Pines Is FINE, 12 x 9, soft pastels on UArt - "I built my 'Paint That Book' submission on a demo I created for a pastel society. It's from a book series by Canadian author Louise Penny. It is never titled "Three Pines" but that is the name of the town around which all the detective-solved mysteries occur. A recurring and memorable character in the book is an ancient poet, Ruth. She is miserable and negative, but actually hides a good heart. She rescues a duck who becomes her constant companion and who mimics Ruth's favorite expletive. The book of poetry Ruth wrote is "FINE". If you know the series, then you know how apropos it is."</image:caption>

I’d written a short story about our crossing the Atlantic in a small boat in 2002. We had indeed acquired a Mozambique canary in Portugal, and he is the focus of 10 year-old Jasmine telling the story. (Of course he was a hero.) I just didn't get to the illustrations. But I can at last make a cover! As a graphic designer I was prompted to typeset the title and author. That may get me to finish it! It’s on black UART, soft pastels and pastel pencils."</image:caption>

<image:caption>NANCY CLAUSEN ~ A Tree in Winter, 12 ½ x 9 1/2, Sennelier Ingres paper, Unison and Rembrandt pastels - "The idea for my painting came from a poem I had to read in English class many many years ago. It was written by Joyce Kilmore. It's in a book called Trees: and other poems. It starts, "I think that I shall never see a poem as lovely as a tree." I believe his tree had leaves on it. My tree does not as it's still winter. My tree is a Japanese Maple that's now about 20 years old. If I had put the leaves on it, then you really wouldn't see all the tree with its gracefulness. If you look closely, there is a little red here and there as it's beginning to bud.</image:caption>

My reference is from a photo of a gravel road I took near Boone, NC. The book itself is about the challenges of building the Western North Carolina railroad in the rocky and rugged mountain environment in 1879. Ehle was born in Asheville and wrote several notable historical fiction books set in the rural NC mountain areas. He has also been called the father of southern Appalachian literature. I enjoyed this adventure and reading Ehle’s impressive bio info."</image:caption>

<image:caption>ALEC HALL ~ Lassie Come-Home, 10 x 8, UART sanded pastel paper, 500 grit, Rembrandt, Great American, Carb-Othello Pastel Pencils - "I chose one of my childhood favorites “Lassie Come-Home” by Eric Knight. I read the book in elementary school and must have watched the original 1943 movie with Roddy McDowall and Pal (who played Lassie) on TV on many Saturdays; and of course, I watched the TV show “Lassie” in the 1950s. While I marveled at the beauty and intelligence of Lassie (a heavy-coated, sable, rough collie), it always bothered me that Lassie was not a Border Collie, since the story took place in Yorkshire, England and Scotland. Thus, I edited the book’s main character to be a champion Border Collie. All the names of the characters, the plot, and the story’s location remain faithful to Eric Knight’s novel. Happy painting!"</image:caption>

Decided to go with a girlhood classic, Little Women, because I admired the independent and serious Jo March so much. But it was hard to find a reference of a her writing in the attic. I ended up using a clip from a film version. The book title lettering was done in colored pencils; the rest in soft pastels on Canson Velvet. Sorry for the strange dotted surface – I tried to spray fixative at temperatures below freezing and the dots did not disperse! Ugh!! Lesson learned! Thanks again Adventure Guru!"</image:caption>

<image:caption>MERYL MEYER ~ Winter's Snow Birds, 9 x 11, Blue Pastelmat with assorted pastels - "I love photographing birds in winter, especially during and after a snowstorm. Over the years I have been collecting photos. I am particularly fond of the Dark-eyed Juncos and Cardinals. This is from my own reference. We had a group of Juncos this morning. This particular Junco is a female with brown, gray, and white feathers perched on my deck railing. I liked the artistic pose and played with the background adding an impressionistic feeling of the woods. I attempted to soften the feathers. I liked painting on Pastelmat for the soft effects. This was a fun Challenge, one that I am quite familiar with. I published a children's book about 3 years ago which I am quite proud of. It was a 3 year labor of love. I decided to create a new pastel illustration for this challenge of another possible book. I added text on the cover to help imagine it as a book."</image:caption>
