Three Key Benefits of Marsha Savage Workshops
- My workshops encourage the student to study the key elements of starting a painting in a controlled way. A plan is made, started and keeps the student on track, instead of just “flying the by the seat of their pants.” Besides at times being intuitive and following that “gut” reaction, a sense of control should be maintained.
- Studying with a teacher in a workshop allows students to ask their own questions, but more importantly to see and listen to other students’ questions and processes. Many times a student may not even know the question they wish to ask. I encourage students to listen to what the other students are asking and what my response to those questions might be.
- Learning to enjoy the journey of painting, not necessarily trying to finish a piece is a key element in my discussions during the whole of the workshop. This also means to follow their own their own path, taking what they need from the workshop and are capable of at their stage, not just learning to paint in the style of the instructor.
Workshop Description
Please arrive promptly by 9:00 and set up your equipment. If we are allowed to arrive a little early and enter the venue, please do so. ( A supply list will be given upon registration.)
This workshop is appropriate for beginners through advanced. Advanced students will learn how to raise their art to the next level. There will be a short discussion about what each student wishes to receive from this workshop.
A demonstration will start the day on the first morning. We will discuss quickly creating a thumbnail sketch to work from, blocking in the darks and lights, finding the colors and developing the painting. You will not necessarily finish each painting. The purpose of this class is not to paint a pretty picture from start to finish – but how to plan and start properly to avoid problems.
The workshop will consist of instruction on composition, thumbnail and notan sketches, value, temperature, and color theory. We will discuss:
- Knowing why you want to paint a certain scene
- Painting from photographs, and how to make a painting look as if painted on location
- Choosing color and value from an emotional standpoint as well as theory
Critiques will be given continually as each student is helped at their easel.
Artist Statement
My philosophy and favorite saying is “It’s the journey!” An artist should take pleasure in the journey, indulging in the pure job of playing with the paints or whatever medium is used. For me it is the journey, not the destination! As the artist, capturing the emotion of a place, recognition or a feeling that one can identify with, is important to me. My paintings are the expression of a chosen moment in time. To make you see what I have seen is part of my objective, but to have to feel what I felt is the ultimate goal. The journey of the mind is as important as the journey of the feet!
