Morning Demonstration – “Painting an Ocean Wave with Soft Pastels”

“Cool Splash”

In this demo, you will learn how to capture the translucency in an ocean wave, show its volume and express its movement! Lana will show how to use the texture of paper and color layering to create the beautiful textures of the seascape, like the rippled surface of the water or sea foam, etc. Lana will show how the wet underpainting technique helps with creating beautiful rich and luminous color.

Afternoon Workshop – “Painting a Translucent Wave with Soft Pastels”

Students will have an opportunity to practice and get feedback on the techniques used in the demo, with particular focus on creating the effect of translucency in a wave and the specifics of color mixing in pastels. Students can use Lana’s provided reference photo and follow her demo steps or choose their own wave reference photos (see tips on how to choose a better image below). * For those students who are new to pastels or never painted a seascape, using the instructor’s photo is recommended as a more guided approach.

“Fresh Mint”

Tips on how to choose a good Wave reference photo:

  • Look for a wave with strong enough contrast between sunlit and shadow areas. The side or even back lighting works better. Front lit waves look more flat and more difficult to paint.
  • Crop the scene to have a closeup of a wave, with more interesting shapes and light/shadow pattern.
  • Having a clear translucent area in a wave adds interest and highlights the translucency of the water.
