3/14/2026: SUGGESTING DETAIL w/Mark Ivan Cole ~ Register and Pay

$60.00
  • Online Zoom Workshop

  • Saturday, March 14th

  • 1:30 - 4:30

Have you ever looked at a painting and thought, "Wow, that's a LOT of detail," only to discover that it's really not? We can paint every leaf and twig, every blade of grass - and that's fine - but what if we don't? It's a whole different experience.

Our brains are designed to enquire. As a painter, not "spelling everything out" can leave room for imagination, inviting the viewer to contemplate the mystery.

This workshop focuses on playing with implied details. Using the forest interior as our challenge, we’ll block out the key elements and then create the suggestion of detail using different tools and techniques in soft pastels.

  • REQUIREMENT: You must be a current APS member to attend.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mark Ivan Cole

Award-winning artist and teacher Mark Ivan Cole, PSA, IAPS/MC began making art as soon as he could hold a crayon. He could be described as self-taught, but that does not give proper credit to the amazing artists - both contemporary and historical - whose works and methods he has spent decades studying. He was juried into the Pastel Society of America as a signature member in 2018, received his Master Circle designation from the International Association of Pastel Societies in 2025, and has painted, exhibited and taught around the world. When not out with his wife exploring some beautiful place elsewhere on the planet, he is painting landscapes, recording original music, or working on his latest novel at home in Portland, Oregon, USA.
